This is the introduction to a song that my brother, Brian and I sang at our mother’s memorial service.

This song bears significance today for many reasons, not the least of which is that Mom asked us to sing it.

It’s significant because she sang it to me and to my brothers when we were children…and because my name occurs in the lyric, she always made me feel like it was written just for me.

It’s also significant because it so fully represents her journey, and the tenor of the last few weeks.

During her illness, she was frequently too warm, and often thirsty. Having a cool drink was a source of great pleasure for her.

She wanted more than anything to spend her last days at home, looking out the window at her lake, which she did.

Her home was decorated with pictures like these. (seascapes)

Her favorite place was the ocean.

Water played a significant part in her life.

But this song in particular, is significant, because it represents her spiritual journey. A journey like the one the song tells of. A long and arduous one… A journey of disappointment and confusion, of great love and dedication, and of seeking God’s face.

A journey centered on the quest for peace and refreshment. Refreshment she found in the waters of baptism just a little over a week ago. Jesus is the living water.

Drink deeply. Mom.
